Reduce poverty by strengthening families

Taldeya Foundation

The Taldeya Foundation was set up in June 2021: Talent Development Young Africa.
The Taldeya goals are: to help reduce poverty, to support talent and trade development among youth, and to strengthen communities.

We are focusing on the Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2, 3 and 4.

We are working together/collaborating with local partner organization CBO (Community Based Organisation) Ligusa in Kenya on the following initiatives:

Project 2: Skills for Work (2022)

Creating employment and a source of income for young people, to help them build a better future for themselves and the community they are living in.
We do this by working with the young people and by building on their talents and skills.

The project is in the region of Nyakach near Lake Victoria, county Kisumu, Kenia.

Project From Home to Home

Community Children’s home Ligusa

Around 1998, there was a high mortality rate in Nyakach area, Kisumu county in Kenya, due to Aids. Home Ligusa opened its doors at this time to support vulnerable children, many of them orphans.

The awareness that children raised in a proper family will develop a better sense of self-worth, belonging, and identity, led to the decision to gradually phase down the community home, and to transform it into a vocational/Talent development center.

Ligusa wants to reunite all 145 children with family. 85 children have moved from the orphanage to live with a family member by the end of 2021. In 2022, the remaining 60 children will be united with family. By providing family-based and community-based care to the large, extended families, as many as 1,200 people in total can benefit from these programs.

Main activities of the From Home to Home project:

1

Connecting children from Home Ligusa with a family

  • The children receive training in empowerment and physical resilience.
  • Families receive counseling from a professional team and training in sustainable agriculture, chicken keeping.

2

Offering a starter package to children: Supporting development

  • School fees for high school students, school materials.
  • Fabric for uniforms, sewn by women of the village.
  • Bags and sanitary towels.

Price per package: € 80,- per child.

3

Offering a starter package to families: Farming

  • Chicks, vaccinations, feed for 1st months
  • Metal building materials
  • Seeds (for families from Ligusa 1 and 2)
  • Cash

Price per package: € 90

Vegetables and eggs will bring the families an extra meal per day, with vitamins and proteins. This will contribute to better health and wellbeing as well as better focus in school for the children.
In due time, gardeners with a business sense will be able to sell a part of their crop on the market.
Women are often the center of the family. Through counselling, we will encourage both men and women to take responsibility together for these new ventures. After all, this will profit the whole family. The extra means and counselling will help the families to reduce poverty and will support the development of the children.
